Radiation plant in Japan is equivalent to 168 Hiroshima bombs

The amount of radioactive cesium has leaked from the nuclear plant hit by a tsunami is roughly equivalent to 168 atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima, the agency said on Friday nuclear Japan.

The Agency for Nuclear and Industrial Safety provided the calculation at the request of a parliamentary panel, but noted that a simple comparison between the instant a bomb explosion and accidental leakage over months is impossible and the results could be “irrelevant.”

The agency said radiation fired by the Fukushima plant was approximately one sixth of that produced by the Chernobyl disaster in 1986.

The earthquake and tidal wave on March 11 nuclei fused three nuclear reactors at the plant Dai-ichi Fukushima. Explosions and fires off radiation in the environment.

The report said the damaged plant fired tera 15,000 becquerels of cesium 137, which lasts for decades and can cause cancer, compared with 89 of the uranium bomb launched by the United States.

The bomb “Little Boy” dropped on August 6, 1945 destroyed much of the city and killed about 140,000 people. A second atomic bomb on Nagasaki three days later killed tens of thousands more and made Japan surrendered to end World War II.

The Hiroshima bomb claimed the most victims by the intense heat wave and neutron rays from a nuclear explosion in the air and its fallout. No one has died from radiation fired by the Fukushima plant where an explosion due to accumulation of hydrogen damaged the reactor buildings, but not the nuclei of these.

The report estimated that iodine-131, another isotope that accumulates in the thyroid gland, and strontium-90, which has a half life of 28 years and can accumulate in bones, leaked from the plant in a quantity equivalent to 2.5 of the Hiroshima bomb.
