Dalton Police Warn Of Scam Artists

The Dalton Police Department said Monday that officers are investigating a report of two individuals who ripped off nearly $100 from an area Racetrac gas station.

Police say the crooks using a type of “quick change” scam where they kept having a cashier make change in varying amounts before leaving with more money than they had to start with.

Investigators believe that this incident is not related to a similar scam that happened at the Market Street Cracker Barrel and was reported by area media outlets earlier this month.

On November 30, 2010, two men entered the Racetrac on Walnut Avenue and made a $3.00 purchase with a $100 bill. As the cashier began to make change, the first suspect asked for the $100 bill back, saying he would pay with three $1 bills instead.

The suspect kept the cashier confused by asking for different amounts of change, and took the original $100 and approximately $97 in change and left before the clerk realized what had happened.

The first suspect is a black male, standing about 5’10 and weighing approximately 240 pounds. He wore a black leather jacket and red toboggan-type hat. The other suspect is a black male, standing approximately 6’ tall with a slim build. He wore a long black coat and a black toboggan-type hat. They left in a gold mini-van heading towards Interstate 75.

This scam is similar to the “quick change” incident in late November at the Market Street Cracker Barrel, and also to incidents reported in the area in the past.

Business owners and also individuals should be wary when making change, especially when presented with large bills. If a customer starts asking for different types of change, it’s best to stop and make sure not to be confused.

Anyone with any information on this crime or the suspects involved is asked to please contact Detective Ricky Long with the Dalton Police Department at 706-278-9085, extension 168.
