As temperatures continue to fall, there are some who have no choice but to bundle up and go outside.

During the day, temperatures stayed at freezing or below. But when the sun went down, temperatures went with it, creating all sorts of winter weather challenges.

“Today has been awful,” said Higgins Tire and Auto Service Owner Buddy Higgins.

Higgins says cold temperatures historically bring in more cars to fix, and this freeze is no different.

“It’s batteries, alternators, water pumps, and we’ve also had some tires to come in that was flat because people had slid into the railings or curb,” Higgins said.

But while Higgins and his crew can hide from the cold, firefighters aren’t so lucky. Night or day, hot or cold, they answer every call.

“If I had to take my pick, I’d pick the colder weather,” said Chattanooga Fire Captain Kristin Smith.

Smith has been fighting fires in all sorts of weather for 10 years. The coldest she remembers was a few years ago.

“We could flick icicles off of each other’s helmets. The water, it just froze. It was so cold,” Smith said.

Smith says they’ve battled several fires over the past few days in the bitter cold, including one Monday night at an abandoned building on Broad Street.

“Do the best you can, and be as safe as you can, and try to help other people be safe and stay warm.”

But there were some who actually chose to go outside in the cold for fun. Jonas Eichelberger and Jaimie Callaway went for a stroll over the walking bridge to see the lights Monday night.

“We got out and said, ‘It’s pretty damn cold out here!’ So we walked down to Dollar tree so we could pick up some stuff,” said Eichelberger.

Callaway added, “Yeah, we forgot our gear at home. So we got some warm gloves and hats.”
