Varnell Tops "Best Place to Raise Kids" List

A big bonus for one Whitfield County town is coming from a major business magazine.

BusinessWeek.com named the small town of Varnell as the best place to raise kids in the Georgia. Residents say they are elated about the ranking, but the town has always been one of a kind.

“We are a great community, very family-oriented. It’s just a wonderful place to live,” says Christi Chumley, a Varnell parent.

The town is about three miles long. BusinessWeek cited the Varnell’s good schools and affordable housing as part of its appeal.

Chumley’s son, Eli, is fourth-grader at Varnell Elementary. Varnell met federal Annual Yearly Progress standards last year. It is part of the Whitfield County Schools.

“The sports are good. It’s all local, all your friends live close,” Eli says.

Kenny Reed, director of Varnell’s Park and Recreation says, when it comes to statewide acclaim, the city is just getting started.

“We’ve had a lot of basketball games here, we’re now working on a community center, which is going to be fantastic for all the community to be a part of,” Reed says.

The magazine also lauded the town for its parks and trails, Nob North Golf Course, and it’s annual Prater’s Mill Country Fair.

Leesburg, Georgia was the runner-up for the title.
