Candidate Withdraws, Calls Mayoral Process: ”Good Ole Boy”

We have all read latest news written by popular journalist. The news about Candidate Withdraws, Calls Mayoral Process: ”Good Ole Boy” was a long time a coming. But the news doesn’t stop here. The writer shows two wonderful talents. Read the the rest sections to see what I mean. By: News Channel 9

NewsChannel 9 is contacting the eight candidates for Hamilton County’s interim mayoral position. Some of the candidates say the interview process established by the Commission, is too closed door. The Commission will appoint the interim Mayor on December, 27th.

This came up on the heels of outgoing Mayor Claude Ramsey becoming Governor Bill Haslam’s deputy governor and chief of staff. This afternoon, Russell Collins withdrew his name. Collins called the interview process secretive and gives the appearance of a “clandestine ‘Good Ole Boy’ approach to politics.”

Collins submitted his pointed withdrawal letter this afternoon. To read all of it, click here.

NewsChannel 9 asked Commissioner Chester Bankston why the commission opted for private interviews. “The candidate has the choice to do whatever they want to do, if they want to call us and have a public interview, they’re welcome to do so,” Bankston said.

But an email from the Commissioner’s Office contradicts that. NewsChannel 9 obtained the e-mail sent to candidates. It appears to be a blanket form-letter and informs the candidates to contact the Commissioner’s individually. Denise D. Russell-Ford told NewsChannel 9 the process is “strange.” She has her suspicions that the Commission has already made up its mind.

Russell-Ford, a registered nurse, said, “It’s not even transparent for me as a potential appointee. And then when I found out it wasn’t an eye to eye interview like you would do for even a job interview, it’s strange.”

Collins also said, “It seems brazen to believe that a panel of individuals could so easily dismiss the fundamental belief that all Americans have a right to be included in government.”

NewsChannel 9 contacted County Attorney Rheubin Taylor to ask why such a prominent position as County Mayor will be appointed by the County Commission. Taylor says state law (powers of county legislative body) requires the county to fill vacancies. He also cited tradition, saying the County had appointed judge, sheriff, school board, assessor and commission vacancies in the past.
