Several truck drivers in north Georgia, face Christmas, without paychecks. hey claim Smith Trucking, just south of Dalton is stiffing them out of thousands of dollars and NewsChannel 9 found evidence the trucking company faces serious financial problems.

NewsChannel 9 had an interview lined up with a trucker out several thousand dollars, but he backed out at the last minute, fearing repercussions. However, several other people, families, are not getting paid this Christmas.

Around noon, a truck rounds the corner of Smith’s gravel parking lot. It foreshadows just one of the money problems at Smith Trucking, or SFT Transportation LLC. A father and son operate the company.  Upon arrival, NewsChannel found a man from Grading Solutions waiting outside Smith’s locked office door. He declined to give his name but confirmed Smith owes his company about $2,000 for a haul Grading made.

The truck that rolled in was from Grading Solutions and backed in to take a “Smith Logistics” refrigerated trailer as collateral.

NewsChannel 9 spoke at length with one trucker off camera, but he did not want his name used. He says that’s out of fear of not getting paid at all. He says right now he says he’s out about $7,000. With two children at home, this Christmas, the sacrifices have been deep.

NewsChannel 9 researched this company and found this blog. Four people posted on the “Topix” website of not getting paid, dating back to mid-October. One posts he’s out over $2,000. And Smith Trucking has also not paid his rent for the past three months.

NewsChannel 9 spoke with the building co-owner, Bradley Mathis. “He came down last week and we agreed he would move and he’s supposed to pay me the back rent when he can.” Mathis says Smith is supposed to be out by the end of the year. NewsChannel 9 searched for answers from Smith, but found truck driver Jerry Donaldson instead.

Donaldson said Smith has paid him on time. “I work here, I get paid every week if the drivers say they ain’t getting paid, that’s drivers that didn’t do their jobs, they left their trucks or trailers,” Donaldson told NewsChannel 9. Next, he locked the gate around the business. Moments before, Grading Solutions left but without the trailer it had first connected to.

NewsChannel 9 left messages with the owner, but Ken Smith has not called us back. Meanwhile, a tipster told NewsChannel 9 law enforcement came to Smith Trucking yesterday because of an angry, unpaid truck driver. NewsChannel 9 went to confirm the incident at the Sheriff’s Department, but it was closed for the holidays. Truckers have discussed joining forces in a lawsuit.
