TDOT, GSP Prepare for Snowy Christmas Roads

While many of you will wake up to a white Christmas, road crews will be out all night making sure no white sticks to the street.
Tennessee Department of Transportation workers spent the day putting a salt water mixture on state roads. Salt trucks in Chattanooga are on standby. TDOT crews in Crossville came in at nine on Christmas Eve to continue salting roads. They’ll be working all the way into Christmas morning.

In north Georgia, state troopers are trying to avoid another icy interstate. There were 277 wrecks between Atlanta and the Tennessee state line on I-75 last week. All 16 troopers at the Dalton GSP post are on-call and ready for whatever weather hits.

“You can’t drive on ice like you can snow. They’re two totally different beasts,” said Sgt. Daniel Pollock. “You have traction and you can steer somewhat in the snow, but ice you cannot.”

That ice last week backed up traffic for miles, and a lot of people ended up spending the night in Tunnel Hill, eating at  Waffle House. We went back there tonight to see if they were planning to get home before the snow hits.
“I’m gonna go home, park the car, and I’m not gonna move until Monday afternoon when I have to go to work,” said David Welch.

But someone who might brave the snow is Chris Arrington. He says he’s never had a white Christmas, and wants to enjoy it.

“We might go riding in it.. We got a four wheel drive truck,” Arrington said.
TDOT Management Center Director Bob Vanhorn says leaving the driving to them. He says your best bet is to stay put if there’s snow or ice in your area.
“If we get rain, it’ll just be icky winter rain, but if we get snow, it may be dangerous to be out in the roadways,” said Vanhorn. “So I’m suggesting everybody be with your family. Enjoy the holiday. We’ll take care of the rest.”
