I Put a Spell on You

Ever hear a song titled “I Put a Spell on You”? Perhaps the answer is no. But try to ask your grandparents or parents, maybe they are very familiar with this song. The song was created by Jalacy “Screaming” Hawkins a boxer and pianist in 1956, and was released one year later. This song is a blues ballad, and has been included in the list of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That shaped Rock and Roll, and also by Rolling Stone magazine placed in the ranking of 313 of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

At first this song has a slow tempo, and told us about someone who loses his girlfriend and wants her back again. But when recording, Hawkins re-arranged the song in a drunken state, so that the listener think this song tells of something scary, about a man who spell a woman so that she becomes his. This version became so very famous. In fact, because of the impression that shown by this very scary song, this song became the Halloween compulsory song every year. Lots of musicians who sing this song again, but only a few can succeed, including: Nina Simone, Arthur Brown, Marilyn Manson, and Bette Midler.

Hawkins died in 2000 and was rumored to have more than 50 children. Wow, this is probably that Hawkins has a spell to ensnare women and make them surrender. Just like the title of his famous song “I Put a Spell on You.” And if you want to scare your friends, play this song in the middle of the night when the atmosphere was dark, and wait till they scream of fear.
